Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipWe're at the 2014 State Winter Games here in Syracuse, and we have a floor hockey team that will be playing is in the process of playing right now where a group from Northeast Westchester Special Recreation from the Hudson Valley region for Special Olympics and unified Partners is where you have our Special Olympics athletes paired with typical people coaches.
And they'll be on the same playing field.
This is a team that has been working together for a number of years now and is they're actually amazing.
They've grown together as a team and they work well and they're looking forward to a good time.
I mean, it's a group of people that either live at home with their families or in group homes or supervised apartments, and they're just a great bunch.
Some of them we've worked with since they were four or five years old, and now they're 25 years old.
And here they are playing still with us.
They're impressive.
They're really, really good.
And they know it gets physical and they're prepared and we got one of the girls on our team and she's down.
She's back up and right back up.
She is impressed everybody.
And how rough and tough.
And, you know, she gets in there and she plays with all the big boys with no hesitation.
And these guys just I think it just adds to their determination.
I think it adds to their everything, everything that they're doing is just like I'm you know, I can get through it, I can get through it, I can get down, I can still get up.
I can still try to win this game.
I think it's amazing.
It's amazing how hard they play.
And I think they learn so many life lessons by what they're doing on the court.
And I think it's a wonderful experience for everyone and for the coaches as well.
You know, we have to try to keep them upbeat, keep them knowing that you're playing hard and it's okay if you're losing or it's okay.
But I think there's a lot of good life lessons for them on the court.
And they carried over off the court.
And our guys especially have formed such friendships both in and off the court.
And it's really nice to see that carry over for them.
